I should make a nice "books" icon for these, LJ. I'll mull it over.
Couple weeks ago, I picked up the new Halo novel, "Ghosts of Onyx" by Nylund. In a (successful) attempt at getting more money, it was an oversized paperback with largish text. Which would have fit just fine into a normal-sized paperback with normal text, but nooooo...
Anyway, I've read each of the Halo novels, the ones by Nylund and the one by... what's his name? Dietz? Anyway, I've read "The Fall of Reach", "Halo: The Flood", and "First Strike". I think my favorite was what's-his-name's "The Flood". It was essentially just a game novelization, but the author worked in enough other things going on at the same time that the story was expanded nicely.
None of the "Halo" books are going to make it into my best-loved-books list. (Hold on- I have a list?!) I don't care too much for sci-fi, as a general rule. It's always kind of dark, and the themes get repetitive- overcrowding, dead environnments, vast and implacable enemy. And Ghosts of Onyx(GoO) was no different.
Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike it. It isn't a bad book, it's just not to my taste.
It's always irritating when a book leaves me with more questions than answers. When I'm not sure which character is which.
Also, I didn't really like most of the characters. Sure, Dr. Halsey, Kelly, Linda, Will, and whoever I'm leaving out appeared, but there was a surplus of others that I never developed any empathy for. Never hated, either, but still. When they died, it was just "Oh. He/she existed?" or "Well, he's out of the way..."
I tend to like books for the characters. If an author can manipulate me into genuinely feeling emotion(other than raw hatred for being stupid) for a character, I'm sold. This just didn't do it for me, so...
Meh. Lots of hype over something I don't plan on rereading for a good while.
