Ginger beer

About 2"/50mm of fresh root ginger - more if you like it spicy, less if not
A lemon
8 oz/ 250 gm sugar
A tablespoon/ 15 ml dried baking yeast - baking yeast because you want bubbles not alcohol

Crush the ginger, chop the lemon and put them in a clean bucket with the sugar.
Pour on 1 gallon (British)/ 5 litres/ 160 fl oz of boiling water.
Cover it with a cloth and leave to cool to blood heat/ luke warm
Sprinkle the yeast on top, recover and leave for a day.
Siphon the liquid into bottles - plastic 2 litre pop bottles are good - avoiding the yeast at the bottom and the fruit floating on top. Leave a gap of an inch or so and put the tops on tightly.
Leave for 3 days.

Open outside and don't over indulge. The longer you leave it the more alcoholic and the less sweet it becomes. Too long and it's not nice.

Meringue cookies

4 large egg whites 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar 1/4 tsp. salt 1 1/2 cups
sugar 1 Tbsp vanilla extract

Beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until they hold soft peaks.

Add the salt.

While beating at a high speed gradually add the sugar to incorporate.

Add the vanilla.

Beat at high speed until the mixture holds very stiff peaks.

Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased or non-stick baking sheets. They do not
need much space between them, as they do not rise.

Bake them in a 200 degree oven for three hours. Cool before storing.

Recently I remembered something from my early childhood. It probably ties in to the visceral “No, put it back!” response I have to pictures of someone holding helpless baby birds, and hey, maybe to my empathy for Yuuya.

There’s a fic where Yuuya didn’t really stop and think about what he was doing as he was doing it and then was horrified… now that I think of it, I can relate.

I was little and clumsy, but allowed to be outside in my aunt’s yard for a while without supervision. I found mourning doves in a nest so close to the ground that I could reach it, and I took out the eggs and carried them off with the idea that I’d take them home and hatch them. Dumbass kid plans.

Almost immediately I dropped one. It was just yolk and white, no big deal. Then I dropped the other onto the pavement, and it had this almost-formed fetal bird in it that twitched a little and was awful.

I remember that I cried to my parents about it, but I didn’t tell them it was my fault. They just thought I’d found it there and the wind had smashed it or something.

For years it was like this awful secret, and I always felt guilty. Huh. I haven’t thought about it in a long time.

I loved Mercedes Lackey's Joust, but I felt like the other books in that series kind of... declined. I'm putting my copies up on paperbackswap.com, and I figured I'd copy out the only part of Aerie that I loved.

There's a god often seen as a god of evil, Seft, obviously a take on the Egyptian Set. Mercedes Lackey can never write a truly ambiguous character, but didn't want him flat-out evil, so when he killed Siris (Osiris) it was because the latter had to die to be Lord of the Dead, and Siris could not kill himself, and instead lay the task on his brother, the Finder of the Way. He's the god of all hard things. Seft taking Siris's wife was incidental and afterwards.

Anyway, near the end of the book there's a battle against something like a god, Tamat (Tiamat) where several characters become god-avatars, briefly, and Seft's chosen priest is one of them, and to win the battle the priest has to pretty much offer himself to be killed. When things are over the other gods scarper, but Seft lingers a minute, chooses another priest, appoints said priest's wife to take the guy's former position, and I'm just going to put down the relevant bits.

Kiron got the impression of someone standing, someone with furled wings, or a cloak like wings, brooding down on him. I am the god of difficult choices. Never forget that. He knew that, my Chosen did, and he knew that we must share that choice.

Make the Two Kingdoms into One. Guard your borders, yet do not expel the stranger. Be vigilant, but not despotic. Remember that the difficult choice is almost always the right one.

So there was an audio drama of ANH put out in 1981 by NPR. It's pretty good, I've always thought. Expanded on the movie's scenes in various interesting ways. I'm posting now because it actually shows the scene where Vader tortures Leia for information. He uses the Force and mind games and... it's really awful and intense.

Also, it's one of the very few early-Star-Wars-things that could be used to sell the idea that Lucas had the whole story planned from the start. He claims that, but there's not much evidence, considering.

Personally I don't think much about planned/not planned, but... man, that scene is a lot harsher in light of the rest of the films. Drawing on Mustafar much, Vader? Plus, this is probably the only time he's ever spoken to Leia gently. Definitely the only time he's talked to her as her father, at least until TaB.

"The Old Astronomer to his Pupil" is a lovely poem.

Someone on my plurk list decided to try her hand at voicing it.

I just saw "The Great Mouse Detective", that Disney film. I'd never seen it before.

I really like Basil. You know what I'd love? To read fic or RP involving him and the human Sherlock Holmes cast. He's a pretty obvious expy, after all, and lives under Holmes' house.

It's weird. I like what incarnations of Sherlock Holmes I'm familiar with well enough - I don't know that many, but he's one of those characters that kind of seeps in regardless - but not enough to go seek them out. But Basil just tickles my fancy.

Luke Skywalker cannot dress himself. I've shown a little of that before. He is once called "badly dressed and clearly insane". It's not hard to see why.
